Another Day 52: Life Goes On
Holidays and weekends don't count, so today marks 35 days unemployed. Considering I'm getting paid, am I really unemployed ? I guess so. It's going to continue to be a scary place until I have a job and unless the Accenture job comes through, I don't know when that's going to happen. For now, I consider this time off to be an extended vacation. I haven't been unemployed since 1985, so this has been a difficult adjustment.
I applied for 2 jobs yesterday and already got a "thanks but no thanks" message from one. It was a job I didn't really want, so I'm ok with that. I'd really like the job with Thomson Reuters if Accenture doesn't come through. I think I'd be great at it ! I spent a couple hours searching on LinkedIn today and found nothing to apply for. It's shocking to see the salary some jobs are offering. They want you to have a Masters or Doctorate and the pay is less than what I made at AT&T ! Yes, I did know how lucky I was to have that job - which is why I never took any of their "voluntary offers" to give it up ! By noon I was done with looking for jobs to apply to. Since I haven't heard from Kurt, I can only assume he is still pursuing the exception needed to hire me. And wow ... at 12:36 I got an email from Verizon that they've added me to their talent community ! I didn't even try to apply there as I had heard they won't hire AT&T people. I looked at their open jobs on LinkedIn and there doesn't seem to be many remote jobs. I looked at their open jobs for NY and didn't see anything I'd be qualified for. It's possible they are expanding their IT Consulting soon and haven't posted any specific job ads yet. I signed up to their talent community, so we'll see where it goes ! There must be something about my profile that intrigued them, so if the Accenture job falls through there might be some hope there.
